The Fiemme and Fassa Valleys experience sport at 360° throughout the year
The Fiemme and Fassa Valleys have always been characterized by a strong sporting tradition which is renewed annually not only with the iconic narrow skiing event at the end of January, but also with two other Marcialonga initiatives which involve one cycling and 'another race: Marcialonga Cycling Craft and Marcialonga Running Coop.
Marcialonga
Marcialonga is for everyone the queen of Italian classic cross-country skiing Granfondos and takes place on the last Sunday of January in the Fiemme and Fassa Valleys; a unique natural context framed by the majestic Dolomites, which make Trentino one of the most visited regions in Europe.
Marcialonga was born in 1971 from the passion of four friends who, after having participated in the Vasaloppet in 1969, decided to organize a similar event at their home, in the Fiemme and Fassa Valleys. An event also appreciated on an international level: Marcialonga was named the best " Visma Ski Classic " event in 2018 and 2019, the circuit that includes some of the most renowned granfondos in the world, including the Swedish Vasaloppet and the Norwegian Birkebeinerrennet.
The route offers two variants: the classic 70 km race which leads from Moena to the center of Cavalese, after the famous climb of the Cascata - revisited for the 50th edition which will take place in 2023 - or the Light variant which ends in Predazzo after 45 km of race. The track takes skiers through the villages of the two Valleys, to discover unique and evocative views, accompanied by the cheering of the spectators who come in large numbers every year to support the over 7000 participants.
Marcialonga Running Coop
The Marcialonga Running Coop is a running race, which has been held on the first weekend of September for over 20 years.
Departure from Moena, the "Fairy of the Dolomites", a town linked to fabulous legends and surrounded by the most famous mountains in the world: the Dolomites.
The route runs along the cycle path of the Fiemme and Fassa valleys, always next to the Avisio stream. Through green pastures you reach Predazzo, defined as the "Geological Garden of the Alps", because here there is the highest concentration of geological varieties in the world. The passage in front of the Predazzo Jumping Center is evocative, linked to important international competitions and the upcoming scenario of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic jumping and Nordic Combined competitions.
The center of Predazzo, animated by a warm audience, marks the first change of the relay. Leaving the town centre, you cross further green fields and fir forests, passing the town of Ziano di Fiemme, up to Lago di Tesero, where the view opens onto the valley.
At Lago di Tesero you enter the cross-country centre, also an Olympic protagonist of Milan-Cortina 2026 and already an important sports center which has hosted three editions of the World Cross-Country Skiing Championships, as well as World Cup races and the Tour de Ski. Here there will be the second change of the relay.
Then follows the last 3.097 km for those who will stop in Masi di Cavalese at km 21.097, the typical length of a half marathon, while the other competitors will still have to face the climb up to the finish line in Cavalese (26.5 km). A final difference in altitude of 140 m. along the not demanding but constant climb to reach via Bronzetti, in the center of Cavalese, at dusk.
Marcialonga Cycling Craft
Marcialonga Cycling Craft is the cycling Granfondo among the imposing Dolomites of the Fiemme and Fassa valleys which takes place at the beginning of summer. Marcialonga is one of the stages of the main Italian long-distance racing circuits.
It is possible to choose during the race which of the two proposed routes to tackle: medium distance route (80km +2488) or long distance route (135km +3900).
The names and beauty of the places are well known: Passo Costalunga and Lake Carezza, Passo Pampeago with the Latemar as a backdrop, Passo S. Pellegrino, Passo Valles and the Paneveggio Natural Park.
The valleys are those of Marcialonga: Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa, with a passage also in Alto Adige and in Veneto, in the province of Belluno.
